Air Jordan 12 'Sumo' Revisits Michael Jordan’s 1996 Japan Trip

Nearly 30 years ago, Michael Jordan arrived in Japan and found himself sharing a basketball court with some unlikely opponents: sumo wrestlers. Jordan Brand is revisiting that memorable moment with the Air Jordan 12 'Sumo,' a Japan-exclusive release inspired by MJ’s 1996 visit and the cultural exchange that took place during the trip.

The connection to the Air Jordan 12 is particularly fitting. Jordan wore the silhouette while participating in the basketball session with the wrestlers, turning an unusual appearance from his first trip to Japan into the foundation for a sneaker almost three decades later. Rather than simply reproducing the shoe Jordan wore, Jordan Brand uses the new colorway to blend references to the trip with details inspired by Japanese culture.

Black leather provides the base, with laser-etched wave patterns introducing texture throughout the upper. Night Purple appears across the overlays, while Metallic Gold detailing and subtle speckling around the midsole give the otherwise dark design a more elevated finish.

Some of the strongest storytelling appears through the branding. The traditional Jumpman treatment on the tongue has been redesigned with an appearance inspired by Japanese family crests. Beneath it, the characters “二十三” are embroidered in purple, translating to Jordan's iconic number 23.

The heel continues the Japanese influence with branding styled after senjafuda, the name plaques traditionally found at temples and shrines. Jordan Brand extends the story into the packaging as well. Custom wrapping paper references Jordan's historic 1995-96 season through statistics and performances from the year surrounding his Japan visit. A playful Jumpman paper sumo kit is also included with the release.

Together, those details turn the 'Sumo' into more than another regional Air Jordan colorway. It captures a lesser-known moment from Jordan's global rise, when his influence was expanding far beyond the NBA and helping basketball culture reach audiences around the world.
