Founded in 1946 inPhiladelphia, the Warriors moved to theSan Francisco Bay Areain 1962 and took the city's name, before changing its geographic moniker to Golden State in 1971.The club plays its home games at theChase Center.
The Warriors won the inauguralBasketball Association of America(BAA) championship in1947,and won again in1956, led byHall of FametrioPaul Arizin,Tom Gola, andNeil Johnston. In1975, star players Barry andJamaal Wilkespowered the Warriors to their third championship, widely considered one of the biggest upsets in NBA history.
The team struggled in the 1980s, then became playoff regulars at the turn of the decade with starsTim Hardaway,Mitch Richmond, andChris Mullin, nicknamed "Run TMC". The team returned to championship glory in2015, led byStephen Curry,Klay Thompson, andDraymond Green; they won again in2017and2018(with the help of former MVPKevin Durant) and again in2022.
