You know you love them. You know you need a pair. But you're not sure why.

Keep reading to discover what makes Converse Chuck Taylors a must-have item in your sneaker collection.

A Brief History

With over 100 years to cover, the history of Converse Chuck Taylors runs deep. But in the interest of time, let's cover some of the most notable changes and events that brought us the iconic sneakers we know and love today.

The Start

In 1908, Marquis Mill Converse created the Converse Rubber Shoe Company but didn't start producing basketball sneakers until 1917. This was the turning point that transformed Converse from a basic rubber shoe to a cultural icon.

It was also at this time that the kicks were coined Converse All-Stars. In 1921, the sneakers officially hit the basketball court and earned the endorsement (and nickname) of Hall of Famer Chuck Taylor.

The Move from Athletic to Everyday Wear

The Converse All-Stars gained even more popularity when they appeared at the 1968 Olympics where the US defeated Canada. Rewind 10 years and in the 1950s, the iconic shoe started making waves off the basketball court thanks to James Dean.

The classic black and white colorway remains popular today but the shoe saw some major design changes in the 70s. This is when the Converse One Star was first released featuring a streamlined suede design and single star accent.

The Rock Era

The 80s brought on some big changes for Converse as its popularity grew outside the athletic world. It was in the 80s and 90s that rock bands like Pearl Jam and Guns N' Roses started rocking Chucks (pun intended).

It wasn't long before grunge stars of the 90s like Kurt Cobain and Green Day got on the Chuck Taylor bandwagon. Over 550 million pairs were produced and sold in 1997 alone.

The Buyout

Sadly, this wave of success was short-lived. By 2003, the Converse company was facing some major financial woes.

Its only way out was through a $305 million buyout to the sneaker conglomerate Nike. The deal was considered culturally significant considering Nike produces some of the world's highest-tech sneakers, while the Converse design is anything but high-tech.

Why Converse Chuck Taylors Have Transcended time

Fast forward to today. It's the year 2022 and Converse Chuck Taylors are just as popular as ever. But why?

Let's take a look.

The Rich History

Looking back on the company's history, it's easy to see why these sneakers hold a special place in peoples' hearts. Legendary baller Charles "Chuck" Taylor not only popularized the athletic shoe but also gave it its legendary nickname.

Not many shoes can transition from the basketball court to the silver screen and recording studio all within a few decades. But the Converse Chuck Taylor did.

Wearing a pair of these iconic Converse sneakers is like taking a journey back through time.

Versatility

If you could only own one pair of shoes, make sure it's a pair of Converse Chuck Taylors. Whether you're hitting the grocery store or getting married, these sneakers will complete your look.

Chuck Taylors are one of the most versatile pairs of sneakers ever produced. You can mix and match them with different outfits to create a unique look for every night of the week.

The best part is, this holds true whether you're a rap mogul, professional athlete, stay-at-home-mom, or recent graduate! Everyone and anyone can rock a pair of Chucks and look good doing it.

A Wardrobe Staple

Not only are Chuck Taylors versatile but they rank right up there with a plain white T-shirt and little black dress as wardrobe must-haves. Converse sneakers can dress up any outfit for a night out with friends or even a job interview.

When you have a pair of these Converse in your closet, you'll always be in style.

Durable and Comfortable

Converse sneakers feel as good as they look. While the design and construction are simple, they withstand years of wear and tear.

Chuck Taylor All-Star Converse are especially durable thanks to the rubber sole. Some people claim they have the same pair of All-Star sneakers now as they did growing up.

Now that's what we call craftsmanship.

They Look Good "Broken-In"

Converse Chuck Taylors are like a fine wine -- they get better with age. There's something iconic about a scuffed-up pair of Chucks.

Whether you opt for a classic black and white colorway or the All-Stars in all white, these sneakers look just as good "worn in" as they do out of the box.

Collaborations

Another thing that makes Converse Chuck Taylors unlike any other sneaker is their ability to stand as an iconic symbol while also offering cutting-edge designs. Once the company was acquired by Nike, it was only a matter of time before the collaborations began.

Fans have seen everything from a Simpson-themed collection to a Black Sabbath/Nike collection. Other popular collaborations include Midnight Studios, CDG Play, Dr. Woo, and Off-White.

Everyone Needs a Pair of Chuck Taylors

Regardless of your personal style or budget, you need a pair of Converse Chuck Taylors in your shoe collection. These sneakers have withstood the test of time in terms of popularity and style.

From the basketball court to the runway and beyond, Chuck Taylors are one of the most popular and widely-recognized sneakers of all time. But Chuck Taylors aren't the only Converse sneaker available.
