Kanye West dropped his first album, College Dropout, in 2004. It quickly climbed US charts to number 1, selling about 3.3 million copies. Over 15 years later, the album’s still a well-known favorite.

When Kanye brought his Yeezy line to Adidas in 2013, his shoes sold faster.

They still do.

If you’re lucky, you got them one of two ways: you tried hard to get them, or you paid more to buy them from someone who got them faster.

So you might need to know how to clean Yeezys.

The Basics: What Are They Made From?

Shoe “uppers” are normally made from multiple materials. These materials are stitched together or into other parts of other materials.

This isn’t the case with Yeezys.

Introducing: Primeknit Technology

Yeezys are made with Primeknit: a single material that’s technologically designed using thermoplastic fuse yarns. Adidas discovered it while in Germany in 2010. They immediately started drafting ideas.

Adidas Chief Marketing officer, Hermann Deininger, put the plan in motion on sight. Designs began for a running shoe. It debuted at the 2012 Olympics.

Fit for the Olympics, Primeknit material makes the shoe a few things:

• Flexible

• More comfortable

• Form-fitting

• Ventilating

This technologically-advanced material makes it easy to want to wear them like a professional. It makes it even more important to know how to wash your Yeezys.

How to Clean Yeezys

First Thing’s First: Preventative

One of the easiest ways how to clean Yeezys is to be preventative. You can make sure they get less dirty.

Copping a sneaker protector is a good idea if you don’t have one. While yeezys’ Primeknit material is unique, it doesn’t require an exclusive protective spray.

Anything water-based that’s safe to use on fabric or suede materials will do. Then, the more you get your use out of these shoes, the less you’ll have to clean.

After that, you have two options.

Option One: Washing Machine

There are a few ways to do this. If you want to leave the responsibility to the technology made to do its job, you want to use a washing machine.

But before you start, we have a few tips.

First, remove the laces and insoles from each shoe. Set those aside. Next, find two pillowcases–one per shoe. Tie each shoe in its own pillowcase and toss them in together.

Here’s the important part: turn that temperature down low. As cold as possible. You can thank us in advance.

Use a small amount of detergent: half of what you’d use for a small load.

As long as you don’t use bleach (sometimes we all need the reminder), the washing machine is a good option for how to clean white yeezys, too.

Now, back to those laces.

Find a soft, non-metal, bristled-brush, and scrub those using a mixture of vinegar and water. We like using two parts white distilled vinegar and one part water. Make sure to keep rinsing your brush as you use it.

Important: air dry. Shoes and laces.

Option Two: Cleaning By Hand

Many of us want to keep matters in our own hands, so we made sure to let you know how to clean your yeezys by hand with machine-like quality.

There are a few things to consider.

Product

If you have a sneaker protector on deck, you might have sneaker cleaner, too. If not, it’s not a bad option to consider.

As long as it’s water-based and made to use on fabric or suede, grab it and get ready to go.

DIY Solution

If you don’t have a sneaker cleaner product, not to worry. This is a skill you’ll want to learn anyway.

Remember the solution for your laces? Same thing. Find some white distilled vinegar, and make a mixture using two parts vinegar and one part water.

We recommend putting some clean water in an additional container. This way, you can rinse your brush before putting it back in the cleaning solution. Work smarter, not harder.

Brush

Whether you’re using a sneaker cleaning product or a homemade solution, both methods need a bristled brush.

Just make sure the bristles aren’t metal and that they’re as soft as possible–that way, they won’t damage the material.

If you don’t have a brush, a toothbrush will work. It just might take a bit longer. We know you know it’s worth it. 

Start With the Soles

The soles are the dirtiest, so do those first.

Wipe off the easily removable dirt that doesn’t require a cleaning solution.

Then, dip your brush in the cleaning solution. Scrub in circular motions. Soles are tougher than the upper material, so have at it.

Remember: before you put the brush in more cleaning solution or spray more product on it, keep rinsing your brush in water to remove the dirt.

Move On Up

Next, head to the upper.

You’ll want to hold the shoe by placing your hand within it to stabilize. Then, begin scrubbing—circular motions, rinsing your brush in water often.

The key here is to be generous with your cleaning solution. Less is more, except here.

Let these air dry in a cooler place.

Laces

Like we mentioned, if you use the washing machine, you’ll want to scrub the laces separately with a cleaning solution.

It’s best if you throw these in a bowl of warm water while you work on everything else. Then, scrub with your cleaner, rinse, scrub.

Air dry.
