ASICS Turns the GEL-1130 Into a Relaxed Mule

ASICS is continuing the growing mule sneaker trend with a new backless version of the ASICS GEL-1130. The updated silhouette transforms one of the brand’s most popular retro runners into a more relaxed everyday option while preserving the tech-runner look that helped drive the model’s recent popularity.

The biggest change comes through the heel construction. ASICS removes the traditional collar entirely, replacing it with an open-back mule setup that allows for easy slip-on wear. Despite the more casual structure, the sneaker still uses standard laces across the upper to maintain a secure fit and preserve the familiar GEL-1130 shape.

The overall design stays closely connected to the original model’s early-2000s running DNA. Mesh underlays, synthetic overlays, and layered paneling remain intact, helping the mule version retain the same sporty and technical appearance associated with the standard GEL-1130.

Comfort also continues to play a major role in the redesign. ASICS keeps its signature GEL cushioning setup underfoot, allowing the mule to deliver the same soft and supportive feel that made the retro runner popular beyond performance running circles.

The release reflects how tech-running silhouettes continue evolving into more lifestyle-oriented categories. Instead of simply reproducing archive runners, brands are increasingly adapting them into easier, comfort-focused variations designed for everyday wear and warmer seasons.

The ASICS GEL-1130 Mule is currently expected to release by July 2026.
