New Balance produces the Made in Japan 576 on a dedicated line, using leather of the grade normally reserved for dress footwear. 'Brown' runs a deep tone through the hide across the upper and overlays. The 576 was first built in the late 1980s as a running shoe. ENCAP cushioning combines a soft foam core with a firmer polyurethane rim in the midsole. The Japanese make applies a different finishing standard to the leather than the standard production run.
