Nike split the toe of the Air Rift in 1996, separating the big toe from the rest in a design drawn from Kenyan barefoot running and named for the country's Great Rift Valley. 'Velvet Brown' finishes the upper in a deep earthy brown that runs through the strap and sole. That separated toe box remains the clearest point of difference between the Rift and anything else in Nike's archive. It now serves everyday wear rather than training.
