A gum rubber outsole changes how the Nike LD-1000's waffle tread reads, trading the usual black rubber for a translucent amber that shows the stud pattern more clearly. 'Dark Hazel Gum' sets a hazel brown across the suede overlays against a mesh upper, with the gum sole running beneath. Bowerman designed the tread in 1977 for a long-distance trainer. Gum rubber is softer than standard outsole compound, which grips better but wears faster on pavement.
