Nike designed the Air Rift in 1996 after watching barefoot runners train in Kenya's Great Rift Valley, splitting the toe to separate the first toe from the rest and encourage natural articulation. The Lace version swaps the original's strap system for conventional lacing. 'Healing Orange' runs a warm orange across the textile upper. The outsole is cut with a traction pattern that follows the split through the forefoot.
