Nike KD 5 Elite Returns in 2027 With Two New Colorways

Before Nike Basketball's signature lines became dominated by annual releases, the brand introduced special Elite editions designed to give its biggest athletes an additional performance advantage during the NBA playoffs. One of the most unconventional models from that era, the Nike KD 5 Elite, is now reportedly returning in 2027.

Originally introduced in April 2013, the KD 5 Elite represented a dramatic departure from Kevin Durant's fifth signature sneaker. Rather than simply updating the original with premium materials, Nike completely reworked the silhouette, replacing its high-top construction with a streamlined low-top design.

The redesign was part of a broader Nike Basketball initiative that also included Elite versions of the LeBron 10 and Kobe 8. However, the KD 5 Elite stood apart because of how extensively Nike changed its appearance and performance features.

A carbon fiber heel counter and shank provided additional stability, while Kevlar-reinforced Dynamic Flywire cables helped secure the foot during movement. Nike also introduced a redesigned foam tongue to reduce pressure from the laces.

The cushioning system received an equally significant update. Instead of the visible Air Max technology found on the standard KD 5, the Elite featured a caged Zoom Air unit, giving the sneaker a different approach to cushioning and court responsiveness.

More than a decade later, Nike is reportedly preparing two colorways to reintroduce the silhouette. The first is an 'EYBL' edition, featuring a vibrant combination of Multi-Color, Volt, Neo Turquoise, Total Orange, and Black, referencing Nike's Elite Youth Basketball League.

The second release celebrates Durant's connection to the DMV region, representing Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. The 'DMV' colorway combines Bright Crimson, Volt, Wolf Grey, Gym Red, and Black, offering a regional tribute to the area where Durant grew up.

While the return has been reported, Nike has not yet confirmed whether the 2027 versions will feature updated cushioning or materials. The original 2013 design remains the primary reference until official images of the new releases become available.

The Nike KD 5 Elite 'EYBL' is reportedly scheduled for April 22, 2027, followed by the 'DMV' colorway on June 11, 2027. Both sneakers are expected to retail for $190 USD.
