Nike Kobe 9 Elite Low Protro Celebrates Kobe’s Legendary Rucker Park Night

Before Kobe Bryant became a five-time NBA champion, one unforgettable summer night helped cement his reputation far beyond the NBA. Nike is returning to July 18, 2002, when Bryant unexpectedly stepped onto the legendary Rucker Park court in Harlem, with an upcoming Kobe 9 Elite Low Protro 'EYBL.'

The colorway originally appeared as an exclusive for Nike EYBL players in 2025. Now, official Nike imagery suggests the Rucker-inspired Kobe 9 is preparing to move beyond the youth basketball circuit with a wider release expected this fall.

The sneaker itself takes a less literal approach to the moment. Dark blue Flyknit dominates the upper, while Aqua Mint and light orange accents introduce brighter color around the heel. Rather than recreating the sneakers Bryant wore that night, Nike hides some of the most important references within the design.

Behind the tongue sits “July 18, 2002,” permanently tying the shoe to Bryant's appearance. Alongside it is “155th St. and 8th Ave.”, pointing directly to the location of the famed Harlem basketball court. “Straight To The Court” branding near the heel adds another reference to the night.

Bryant arrived at Rucker Park during an incredible stretch of his career. The Lakers had just completed their third consecutive NBA championship run, but Kobe's appearance placed one of the league's biggest stars directly into New York's celebrated streetball culture.

His performance quickly became part of Rucker lore. Legendary announcer Hannibal gave Bryant the nickname “Lord of the Rings,” referencing the three championship rings he had already collected at only 23 years old. More than two decades later, Nike has increasingly looked back at that night as part of Kobe's wider basketball story.

Earlier in August, the brand revisited the same moment through the Kobe Bryant x Air Force 1 Low Protro 'Rucker Park,' which drew from the white and orange Air Force 1 Mid Bryant wore during his appearance. The Kobe 9 takes a different route, using dates, locations, and smaller details to preserve the story rather than recreating his original footwear. The Nike Kobe 9 Elite Low Protro 'EYBL' is expected to release in Fall 2026 in men's sizing for $210 USD.
