Nike Kobe 8 Protro 'Shanghai Fireworks' Revives a China-Exclusive Classic

Long before international tours became standard for signature athletes, Kobe Bryant was building one of basketball’s strongest connections with China. That relationship produced several memorable sneakers over the years, including a fiery Kobe 8 that originally never received a wider release. Thirteen years later, the Nike Kobe 8 Protro 'Shanghai Fireworks' is coming back. 

Originally released exclusively in China in 2013, the colorway became one of the Kobe 8’s more elusive regional releases. Its limited availability helped build its reputation, but the explosive graphic treatment also made it immediately recognizable within the extensive Kobe catalog.

The sneaker’s Laser Orange, Safety Orange, and Cinnabar palette transforms the engineered mesh upper into a display of fiery streaks inspired by fireworks. Darker Swoosh branding cuts through the bright exterior, while Kobe logos appear across the tongue and outsole.

Additional graphics continue around the heel, while a translucent outsole provides a cleaner finish beneath the vibrant upper. For 2026, Nike has largely preserved the visual identity that made the original pair distinctive rather than reinventing the colorway.

The story carries particular significance because of Bryant’s relationship with Chinese basketball fans. His regular Nike trips to China helped grow his international following, while the original sneaker’s 2013 arrival also coincided with the Lakers traveling to Beijing and Shanghai for preseason games against Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors.

This time, the sneaker returns as a Protro. The approach keeps the recognizable appearance of the original Kobe 8 while updating its performance for modern basketball, continuing Nike’s strategy of making Bryant’s older signature models playable for a new generation. The Nike Kobe 8 Protro 'Shanghai Fireworks' releases November 11, 2026, and will retail for $200 USD.
