Nike is expected to revive one of its most unconventional basketball silhouettes with the return of the Nike Zoom Flight 5 in Spring 2027. Originally introduced in 1997 as Jason Kidd’s first official signature model, the sneaker remains one of the most visually aggressive designs from Nike Basketball’s experimental late-1990s era.
At a time when Nike was pushing futuristic shapes and performance storytelling to new extremes, the Zoom Flight 5 stood apart even among other bold releases from the period. The model became known for its oversized iridescent side pod — often referred to as the “bug eye” — along with sculpted tooling and exaggerated traction patterns that gave the shoe a near-concept-car appearance on court.

Despite its unconventional design, the Zoom Flight 5 was built with serious performance intent. The shoe featured 3/4-length Zoom Air cushioning, a stabilizing midfoot torsion plate, and a traction-heavy outsole designed to support Kidd’s quick directional changes and fast-paced playmaking style. The technical setup helped balance the sneaker’s more experimental visual identity with functionality suited for high-level basketball performance.
The silhouette also belongs to a broader era of influential Nike Basketball designs that helped define the late 1990s. Models like the Nike Zoom Flight 95, Nike Air More Uptempo, and Nike Air Max Penny all pushed footwear design into more expressive territory, and the Zoom Flight 5 remains one of the clearest examples of that creative period.
As Nike continues revisiting deeper cuts from its basketball archive, the return of the Zoom Flight 5 adds another performance-driven classic to the growing retro lineup planned for 2027.
The Nike Zoom Flight 5 is expected to return in Spring 2027 for $170 USD.
