What Types of Materials Are Used in Vegan Adidas Sneakers?

“Vegan” doesn’t necessarily mean organic or even sustainable. What kinds of materials are used in vegan Adidas sneakers and are they sustainable or just vegan?

If the world went vegan, we’d cut the amount of greenhouse gas released by two thirds and save $1.5 trillion worldwide.

We’re talking about more than a vegan diet — you can go the extra mile and make your clothes animal-product free, too. Even your sneakers can be vegan, helping you save the planet one step at a time.

If you’re looking to buy vegan, Adidas has an impressive vegan sneaker collection. However, vegan doesn’t always mean sustainable.

Make sure you know what you’re buying with our guide to vegan Adidas shoes.

Are Sneakers from Adidas Vegan?

Adidas’ shoes aren’t all vegan, but there are some animal-free shoes you can buy. Make sure you know how to spot them so you can separate the vegan from the non-vegan.

You can do this by checking the three things that all vegans look out for when buying sneakers online; are they made from animal products, do they use synthetic or non-vegan glue, and do they test on animals.

Adidas sneakers already tick two of the vegan-friendly boxes. They don’t test on animals when developing their products, and they’ve switched to cruelty-free, synthetic glue. This makes finding vegan shoes at Adidas so much easier!

It all comes down to looking at the last factor when picking vegan sneakers: what materials are they made from?

Spotting Non-Vegan Materials

Because of the various material used, it’s tricky to find fully vegan sneakers. When you’re looking for animal materials in shoes, not only do you have to look at the primary material used, but also every other aspect of the sneaker.

For example, the outer part of the shoe could be completely synthetic, but inside or on the sole, they might’ve used animal skin.

Luckily, Adidas are obvious with their labeling. When looking at a pair of sneakers, you should be able to find a run-through of every material used and whether it’s synthetic, leather, or a mix of the two.

But not everyone has time for that, so we’ve made a list of some of Adidas’ current vegan, sustainable shoes to make your life that little bit easier.

Available Vegan Adidas Shoes

Adidas actually have quite a lot of vegan sneakers to pick from. Vegan shoes make up a big part of their Stella McCartney collaboration.

As a sustainable brand that disagrees with animal-cruelty in a big way, you can trust that every Stella McCartney shoe will be 100% vegan. The range includes the Stella-Lette Slides (an easy slip-on), the Ultraboost sneaker (for a classic look), and Alphaedge 4D sneakers (for serious runners). There are plenty more styles, so check them out to find your perfect fit.

Aside from the Stella McCartney range, Adidas has several other vegan options. Here’s a list of vegan Adidas shoes and their materials:

  • Ultraboost (Continental Rubber, neoprene, and fabric)
  • Adizero (Continental Rubber and fabric)
  • Adissage (Polyester)
  • Pureboost X TR 3.0 (Rubber, synthetic textile, and fabric)
  • Synthetic Stan Smith (Polyester)

If you’re interested in buying vegan Adidas sneakers, browse all their shoes, pick the ones you like, and check out which materials they contain.

Are These Sustainable Shoes?

Adidas do have vegan sneakers, but does this automatically make them sustainable running shoes? Well, this all depends on the materials used, so let’s take a closer look.

First, we have Continental Rubber. Typically for tires, this branded rubber is Continental’s move towards sustainable materials. On Adidas’ site, they confirm that they do use recycled rubber, so we’d hope this is true throughout their sneakers.

There’s also neoprene, which is petroleum-based and non-biodegradable. To put it simply, this is a material that our planet won’t love so much, and it’s not actually sustainable.

But while some of the materials they use aren’t so good for the earth, Adidas do have ranges of sneakers designed with the planet in mind.

Their Stella McCartney range, for example, contains several sneakers made from entirely recycled materials. You can’t say anything wrong about that! With 300 million tons of plastic thrown away each year alone, buying shoes made from our waste is an easy way to become an eco-warrior.

Adidas’ Sustainable Work

The recycled shoes Adidas creates have a super exciting story behind them. The brand teamed up with Parley for the Oceans, a global group that picks up plastic on the beaches before it enters our oceans. They then recycle the waste, repurposing it to create the Adidas sneakers we all know and love, like the Ultraboost Parley.

The brand has gone big on these recycled shoes. In 2020 they plan to make up to 20 million pairs of recycled, sustainable sneakers.

Their plan goes beyond just creating recycled shoes, too. By 2024 they’ll also wholly remove regular polyester from their production, using only recycled polyester instead. They also use recycled nylon, an algae-based EVA, and have removed the likes of PVC and PFC (99% removed) from their production.

You can find more information about Adidas’ move to a more sustainable future on the Adidas Group website.

The Sustainable Sneaker

Of course, Adidas’ shoes aren’t perfect, but it’s not hard to see that they’re doing their bit for our planet. Their rise in sustainable practices is good news for all eco-conscious shoppers!

It can be challenging to find vegan, sustainable shoes, and being able to get them from high-street brands like Adidas is a huge relief. Even if you have to do a bit of research to find which are vegan, it’s worth it to know you’re shopping with the planet in mind.
