If you’ve been anywhere recently where there’s a fashion-forward crowd, chances are you’ve seen a pair of Salomon sneakers. The brand’s technical shoes, which are designed for trail running and other outdoor sports, have become increasingly popular with style mavens and sneakerheads alike.

Salomon sneakers like the XT-4, XT-6, XT-Wings 2, Speedcross, and others are being worn everywhere by everyone these days, not just by trail runners and hikers. So, what do you need to know before you buy a pair? If you’re just getting acquainted with Salomon and are ready to try out a pair for yourself, study this guide that includes a brief history of the brand, a sizing guide, key styles, and more.

History of Salomon Footwear

Salomon is a French outdoor sports brand that was founded in 1947 by François Salomon in Annecy, France. Initially focused on producing ski bindings and other skiing equipment, the company expanded its product line to include a wide range of outdoor gear, including performance footwear, which the brand is now most recognized for.

With a commitment to innovation and performance for active lifestyles, Salomon developed technologies such as the Contagrip® rubber outsole for superior traction, Sensifit™ for a precise and secure fit, and the Quicklace™ system for easy and efficient lacing. The brand’s reputation for durability, comfort, and traction in challenging terrain has made it a preferred choice for those who demand high-performance footwear.

But outdoorsy types aren’t the only ones in love with Salomon. Over the past few years, Salomon sneakers have become incredibly popular as a fashionable footwear option, worn by people with all different types of style, from techwear to normcore to the latest “it girl” aesthetic. Recently, numerous labels and other entities in the fashion space, including MM6 Maison Margiela, Gramicci, and JJJJound, have released collaborations with Salomon, further enhancing the brand’s “street cred.” Today, Salomon owns a place in the sneaker conversation alongside more traditional athletic sneaker brands like Nike, Adidas, and New Balance.

Popular Salomon Sneaker Styles

Salomon XT-6

Originally released in 2013, the Salomon XT-6 is a high-performance trail running shoe designed to tackle rugged terrain with agility, stability, and comfort. Among the innovations in the shoe is the Agile Chassis™ System, or ACS, a series of supportive structures in the midsole that provide both medial and lateral motion support to reduce the chances of rolling your foot. The XT-6 also has Salomon’s Sensifit™ foot cradle design that secures the foot with a snug and supportive fit. The XT-6 is designed to withstand various weather conditions encountered during trail running, including rain, mud, and snow. Its water-resistant upper helps to keep feet dry and comfortable, while the rugged Contagrip® outsole provides traction on slippery surfaces.

Salomon XT-4

The XT-4 is an earlier evolution of the XT-6. Both designs are similar in appearance and tech, with only a few small notable differences. The XT-4 has a slightly wider and bulkier shape than the sleeker, updated XT-6, and the materials used for the upper of each shoe vary slightly, as well.

Salomon XT-Wings 2

Another similar trail running sneaker design offered by Salomon is the XT-Wings. The XT-Wings can be thought of as a “takedown” version of the XT-6 with a more simplified, less tech-filled design that isn’t waterproof, which in turn means it comes at a lower price.

Salomon ACS Pro

The ACS pro is a lightweight and breathable trail running shoe with a very technical-looking design built to take punishment on the trails. It features a TPU “Kurim” structure on the upper for enhanced support. Like the other Salomon sneakers covered here, the ACS Pro has the Agile Chassis System and Quicklace® lacing system. The ACS Pro is not waterproof, but the formidable design of the upper will still help keep your feet protected from the elements.

How do Salomon sneakers fit?

In general, Salomon sneakers are known to fit true to size. This means you should go with your normal shoe size when purchasing a pair. However, the XT-6 is considered to fit more snug because of its sleeker design, so you may want to go half a size up for those.

Key Salomon Technologies

A list of the performance innovations found in many Salomon trail and hiking shoes:

Agile Chassis™ System: This system provides stability and support without sacrificing flexibility. Its technology helps maintain a responsive ride on uneven surfaces.

Quicklace™ System: Allows for easy and secure lacing with a single pull. This ensures a snug and customized fit, reducing the risk of slippage during intense runs.

Contagrip® Outsole: This outsole provides maximum traction on a variety of surfaces, including wet and slippery terrain. Its multidirectional lugs provide grip and stability, allowing runners to navigate challenging trails with confidence.

Sensifit™: Provides a secure and snug fit around the foot. This helps to minimize movement within the shoe, reducing the risk of blisters and discomfort during long runs.

EnergyCell Midsole: Salomon’s proprietary foam that offers cushioning and responsiveness, helping to absorb impact and provide a smooth ride on rough terrain. This helps to reduce fatigue and maintain comfort during extended runs.
