Nike Turns Kobe’s Draft Story Into a Kobe 4 Blind Box Collection

Nike is taking a more experimental approach to storytelling with the upcoming Nike Kobe 4 Protro 'Draft Day' Pack. Rather than focusing on a single colorway, the collection transforms Kobe Bryant’s 1996 NBA Draft experience into a multi-pair release built around every lottery team that passed on him before his eventual move to the Los Angeles Lakers.
The concept expands beyond the familiar Charlotte Hornets narrative that has often been tied to Kobe’s draft story. Instead, Nike created a full series representing all 13 lottery teams from the 1996 draft, with each pair connected to a specific franchise and draft position. The approach turns one of basketball’s most discussed “what if” moments into a collectible footwear experience.

Each of the first 13 pairs features a mostly white wear-away upper that gradually reveals hidden team colors over time. That evolving design reflects Bryant’s rise from draft-night uncertainty to all-time greatness. Numbered lottery-ball graphics, stitched Swooshes, and team-specific accents help distinguish each version while maintaining a unified concept across the pack.
The collection’s centerpiece is the fourteenth pair, which fully abandons the concealed look in favor of a bold purple-and-gold finish inspired by the Lakers. Unlike the mystery-driven pairs tied to the teams that passed on him, this version represents the franchise that ultimately became synonymous with Kobe’s legacy.

What makes the project especially unique is the release format itself. Nike plans to package the collection as a blind-box launch, meaning buyers will not know which pair they receive until opening the box. That unpredictability adds another layer to the storytelling while turning the drop into something closer to a collectible experience than a standard sneaker release.
The Nike Kobe 4 Protro 'Draft Day' Pack is currently expected to launch on June 26, 2026, shortly after the 2026 NBA Draft.
