Nike Shox R4 'Puerto Rico' Honors Boricua Heritage

Nike is celebrating Puerto Rican heritage with a special edition of the Shox R4, one of the brand’s most recognizable early-2000s silhouettes. Arriving just ahead of New York City's annual Puerto Rican Day Parade, the Nike Shox R4 'Puerto Rico' connects the island’s history, culture, and diaspora through thoughtful storytelling and symbolic design elements.

The colorway draws inspiration from the original Puerto Rican flag created in 1895 by Puerto Rican exiles living in New York City. That historical connection makes the release especially meaningful given the longstanding relationship between Puerto Rico and New York, where generations of Puerto Rican families have helped shape the city's culture through music, art, sports, and community.

Dressed in Glacier Blue, University Red, Metallic Silver, and White, the sneaker incorporates colors associated with Puerto Rican identity while maintaining the futuristic design language that made the Shox R4 famous. The model's signature spring-loaded heel cushioning remains intact, preserving the silhouette's distinctive Y2K-era aesthetic.

Nike extends the storytelling beyond the color palette through a commemorative Vejigante mask charm included with the release. The Vejigante is one of Puerto Rico's most recognizable cultural symbols, particularly associated with the towns of Loíza and Ponce. The mask represents the island's rich blend of African, Taíno, and Spanish influences and serves as a powerful nod to Puerto Rican traditions and heritage.

The choice of the Shox R4 itself feels intentional. Over the years, the silhouette has maintained a strong presence within Latino communities, becoming one of the retro models most closely associated with early-2000s street culture. Its enduring popularity makes it a fitting platform for a release centered on identity and cultural pride.

Anchoring the campaign is the phrase "Soy Boricua Que Se Sepa," a statement that translates to "I'm Puerto Rican, and let it be known." The message captures the spirit of the release by celebrating heritage, community, and the enduring connection between Puerto Rico and its global diaspora.

The Nike Shox R4 'Puerto Rico' releases on June 5, 2026, and will retail for $155 USD.
